Campylobacter is most common cause of bacterial foodborne illness. It is most often caused by the bacterium campylobacter jejuni. Campylobacter has been found mainly in poultry, red meat, unpasteurised milk and untreated water.
Campylobacter food poisoning is characterized by malaise, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and rarely vomiting. Diarrhoea can be very severe and bloody with abdominal cramps. The symptoms tend to start 2 to 5 days after exposure to the organism and typically last a week.
